iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus feature Ceramic Shield front cover, protecting them from cracks and physical impacts. According to Apple, Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 14 series is tougher than any other smartphone glass on the market and safeguards the devices from everyday spills and accidents. 

What is Ceramic Shield?

Ceramic Shield is exclusive to Apple smartphones and was first introduced with the iPhone 12, promising more resistant glass to protect against bumps and drops. It’s made by Corning and combines ions and ceramic nanocrystals into the glass through the temperature crystallization process, which makes it tougher and more resistant to bumps and scratches. 

How Tough is Ceramic Shield?

Apple says that Ceramic Shield is tougher than any smartphone glass out there. We tried drop-testing the iPhone 13 at six feet to justify Apple’s claims, and the results were surprising.

The iPhone 13 survived the first face-down drop test with cracked corners and scuffed metals. But, it suffered heavy damage after the second drop. The damage was even worse when we ran the same test with the iPhone 13 Pro, which was damaged after the first drop. This is probably because the 13 Pro is heavier than the standard 13. 

Is Ceramic Shield Tougher Than The Galaxy S22’s Gorilla Glass Victus+?

There is no doubt that Ceramic Shield’s biggest rival is Gorilla Glass. Corning claims that Gorilla Glass Victus+ is the toughest version of Gorilla Glass ever made and that offers much-improved scratch resistance compared to Gorilla Glass 6.

Gorilla Glass Victus+ is used in the Samsung Galaxy S22 Series, the main rival to the Apple iPhone 14. We tried drop-testing the Galaxy S22 face-down at 6 feet to find out which one is better. 

The S22 suffered heavy damage after the first face-down drop test, which made it unusable. On the other hand, the iPhone 13 only suffered cracked corners and scuffed metal after the first drop. 

So, Do I Need A Screen Protector for iPhone 14?

There is no exact answer to this question because it depends on how you treat and use your iPhone. The iPhone 14 is an expensive investment and is made of high-quality material. It should survive your daily impacts.

If you barely drop or scratch your iPhone and want to enjoy it as it is, it’s not a good idea to spend extra cash on a screen protector. In contrast, if you frequently drop your device, then a case and screen protector is a must. 

A screen protector may not allow you to get the most out of your iPhone, but it at least keeps your device alive for as long as possible.
