Apple has recently released the iOS 14.2 for iPhone and watchOS 7.1 for Apple Watch. As usual, these incremental software upgrades include new features, changes and bug fixes.
It’s a major upgrade, requiring iPhone users to download 1.45GB. For iPhone users with only 64GB of internal storage, they need to have at least 3GB of free space for the download and installation process. The device should have at least 50 percent battery charge and a stable Wi-Fi connection is needed. Users can go to Settings> General> Software Update to start updating their devices. Here are new features that you will get:
New emoticons. iOS 14.2 has more than a hundred of new emoticons, which include creatures, faces, food and family. There are also eight new backdrops for these emoticons.
People detection. With the LIDAR sensor, the Magnifier app can notify users when there’s someone nearby. It’s useful for people with visual impairment.
Faster Airpods charging. The battery charging speed of AirPods will be faster and it will take less time for the wireless earbuds to get completely energized. There’s a new sound level warning feature that notifies users about the high-volume level, which could permanently affect hearing.
Intercom through HomePod smart speakers. It’s useful in homes with multiple HomePod speakers. With iOS 14.2, users can directly interact with family members using Intercom or voice communication. It is also possible to connect the HomePod with Apple TV 4K for clearer sound quality.
New AirPlay controls: The new iOS update helps users to easily stream any content in their home devices, including Apple TV 4K.
Music Recognition in Control Center: There’s a new Shazam tile (Music Recognition) in Control Center to help users discover a song. Before iOS 14.2, users needed to use Siri to identify a playing song.
There are also a number fixes that Apple include with the iOS 14.2. Applications no longer appear improperly on Home Screen and there’s also fix for the occasionally dark Camera viewfinder. When users enter password on Lock Screen, contacts won’t be missing. Time in Reminders will return to previous default. The iPhone will now show correct temperature in Celsius. Incoming calls will not interrupt Voice Memos. Another fix is that the display won’t go dark occasionally when you record using Netflix. Apple fixes the “Not Playing” message on the CarPlay Dashboard. The Photo widget will properly show content. Exposure Notifications will no longer disable when users transfer data with iPhone Migration or restore iPhone from the iCloud Backup.
It’s a 366MB update for Apple Watch users and compared to iOS 14.2, it is a relatively minor enhancement. Make sure your Apple Watch has 50 percent charge or charge it while updating. Make sure that you have stable Wi-Fi connection for quick and successful updates. Go to General> Software Update. Look for Download and Install buttons. New features of watchOS 7,1 are:
Volume warning. Users may accidentally set the volume level too high that can impact their hearing permanently.
Support for ECG app. Apple Watch Series 4 or newer gets support for ECG app, which can check for irregular heart rhythm. This update applies for users in Russia and South Korea.
Bug fixes for watchOS 7.1 includes better reliability when using Apple Watch to unlock a Mac. The display of some Apple Watch 6 units won’t go dark when users raise their wrist. The Sport Band icon now replaces the Solo Loop app.
Apple released the tvOS 14.2 update as well for 4th and 5th generation set-top boxes. Users can go to System> Software Update. Alternatively, enable the Automatic Updates option to automatically install the update.
