iPhone 12 Review: Smaller, but Powerful

Alongside the high-end iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, Apple also introduced the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 with lower specs and price. The mini and standard version of the iPhone 12 will target lower-income customers. So can they still meet users’ demands? Let’s check out our iPhone 12 review.

This year’s iPhone lineup comes in 3 different screen sizes. The mini version has a 5.4 inch screen, while the standard iPhone 12 sports a 6.1 inch display. And lastly, the Pro Max model has a 6.8-inch screen, which is the largest display iPhone ever.

The design of all 4 models this year is a mix between the iPhone 11 and the old iPhone 5 / 5s. They still reckon the notch design, but their frames are beveled flat and no longer curved like the predecessors. This is the biggest as well as the most notable change on all iPhone 12 models this year. However, the bezels of the mini and standard version will be made of aluminum instead of steel as on the Pro and Pro Max versions.

iPhone 12 comes in 5 color options: black, green, green, red ,and white.

OLED Display

Even though they are smaller, the two lower price versions get a high-quality display upgrade. Instead of using an LCD panel, Apple brought an OLED panel called Super Retina XDR down to two cheaper iPhone models, thereby improving the display quality while narrowing the screen bezels to the same level as the two high-end models. In addition, the screens of all iPhone 12 models are protected by Ceramic Shield. This is 4 times more durable than previous versions.

A14 Bionic Chip

All four models this year are equipped with the all-new Apple A14 Bionic chip, built on a 5nm process with 11.8 billion transistors. This chip includes 6 CPU cores and 4 GPU cores, offering a 40% performance boost over its A13 found in the predecessors. This is also the chip that now powers the new iPad Air model.

5G Support

At the launch event, Apple said that all iPhone 12 models this year will support 5G networks. There is also a Smart Data Mode feature that allows users to automatically switch between 5G and 4G LTE bands to save battery. Apple also claims that the 5G on the iPhone 12 can deliver download speeds of up to 4Gbps under ideal conditions.

12MP Dual Camera, No LiDAR Scanner

The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 are equipped with a 12MP dual camera cluster. This includes a wide-angle (f / 1.6) and an ultra-wide-angle (f / 2.4) lens. The shooters also support trendy modes such as Night Mode or Portrait. The Night Mode works with both the 12MP selfie camera on the front and with the super-wide camera. In addition, Apple says the new camera on the iPhone offers a 27% improved light reception. On top of that, there is an improved HDR and support for 4K 60fps video recording.

iPhone 12 Mini

This version has a screen size of only 5.4 inches. Although the screen size is larger than the iPhone SE 2020, with the overflow design, the iPhone 12 mini is even smaller than the iPhone SE 2020.

The iPhone 12 Mini retains almost everything you see in higher-end versions. This includes 5G support, Ceramic Shield screen, IP68 water resistance, dual 12MP camera with 4K 60fps recording, and the powerful A14 chip. This will be the perfect iPhone for customers who love small phones. In short, the iPhone 12 mini has a more modern design, a larger screen, and improved features while retaining the signature small size of the SE series.

The mini and standard version will have starting prices of $ 699 and $799, respectively. This year, Apple also said that the new iPhone will not come with the charger and headphones included in the box. Instead, users will have to buy them separately or take advantage of the old chargers.
