iOS 10 feature guide: Music App

iOS 10 is the biggest iOS release ever thanks to its large package of new features and enhancements. However, if you are not a tech savvy, it will take you a while to figure out how to use iOS 10’s new features and additions.

In iOS 10, the Music app has seen a big upgrade in its functionality. The Music  app has seen a new and intuitive design, making it much easier for users to control their library.

  1. Shuffle

From the very first moment you launched the Music app, you will notice that the Now Playing Screen feels different, as the Shuffle and Repeat buttons are no longer there. To access them, all you have to do is to swipe up on the album artwork. This will bring up more stuff like Lyrics and Up Next menu. You will also notice the Shuffle and Repeat buttons next to Up Next menu.

If you want to shuffle songs from Album or Playlist View, the first thing you need to do is to go to any of the Album and Playlist from the library and Browse tab. After that, tap on the “Shuffle All” button above.


If you want to shuffle your entire Library, you can use the step below:

Step one: Launch the Music app and go to the “Library” tab.


Step two: Once you are done, select “Songs” to open all your tracks. You will notice that there is a “Shuffle” button above. All you have to do is to tap on it shuffle all your songs in your library.


Besides, there is a much simpler way you can use to get the job done. In iOS 10, you now can ask Siri to shuffle your songs by saying “Shuffle all my songs”.

  1. Download and manage songs

With iOS 10, you can easily manage your music library and download new songs from Apple Music. Besides, the Music apps now lets you differentiate the songs you have downloaded and the ones that are now available for streaming.

How to enable automatic downloads in the Music app

Step one: First and foremost, you need to sign up for an Apple Music account. If you already have an account, you can skip this step.

Step two: Sign in to your account. Once you are done, go to Settings, select Music tab and activate “iCloud Music Library”

Step three: Once the “iCloud Music Library” has been enabled, “Automatic Downloads” toggle will show up and all you have to do is to turn it on.


Step four: From now on, you can download any stuff to your device by simply tapping on it to add it to library.


Step five: Once you do that, the “+” icon will be replaced by a download button (a rounded button that informs the song is now downloading

Step six: Once the download has been completed, you can access your song by going to “Library” tab and select “Downloaded Music”.


How to manage downloaded music

The Music app now allows you to see how much space your downloads are eating up and you can easily delete songs to free up space. To do that,

Step one: Go to Settings app from your home screen.


Step two: Once you are in, select the “Music” section and tap on “Downloaded Music”. Swipe left on a song that you want to delete.

  1. How to optimize storage

Apple has officially removed the 16GB iPhone and offered iPhone 7 with  32GB of internal memory as standard. However, there are a vast majority of people who are on 16GB iPhones. If you are one of them, storing music on your device can be a nightmare. Luckily, iOS 10 included a new option that allows you to optimize storage for Apple Music.

Step one: To enable Optimise Storage option, you can go to Settings app, scroll down and tap on Music.

Step two: Make sure that you have enabled “iCloud Music Library” . After that, tap on “Optimise Storage”.


Step three: In the next page, turn it on.
