How to quit an app on Mac

Normally, when you want to quit an app on Windows, you only need to click on the red x icon. However, if you are using a Mac, closing an app is different, as you have actually quit an app rather than closing the window.

In reality, there are various ways to quit an app on Mac. In this piece, we will show you five ways to close completely an app on your Mac. Here we go.

1. Menu Bar menu

Menu Bar menu method is widely used by most Mac users to quit an app. A Mac app has its menu bar located at the top of screen that allows you to access different options of the app.

To quit an app from the Menu Bar, click on the app’s name from the Menu Bar and select Quit option from the drop-down menu. For example, if you want to quit the Photos app, click on the Photos app’s name from the Menu Bar, and select Quit Photos from the drop-down menu.

2. Dock app icon

You may have noticed that all currently-open programs and apps will appear on the Dock on your Mac at the bottom of the screen.

Use Dock app icon is one of the easiest way to quit an app on Mac. To do this, all you need to do is to right-click on the app that you want to quit from the application Dock while it is running, and a pop-up menu will appear.

Select Quit option from the pop-up menu and the app will quit. Quitting the app this way means that the black dot underneath the app will disappear letting you know that the app has been completely closed.

3. Keyboard shortcut

There are tons of keyboard shortcuts you can use to make the most of your Mac. Of course, Mac allows you to quit an app using keyboard shortcut.

To do this, make sure that you are in the app that you want to quit, then you can press Command ⌘ + Q on your keyboard and the app will quit.

Keyboard shortcut is without doubt the most effective way to quit an app especially if your Mouse or TrackPad is not working.

4. Menu Bar icon

Some Mac apps just don’t show up in the Dock at all, but instead appear in the Menu Bar, which means that you cannot quit them right from the Menu Bar menu.

To quit these types of apps, you will just need to click on the app icon from the Menu Bar and select Quit option from the drop-down menu.

In this case, because we are quitting the Skitch app, we will click on the Skitch app icon from the Menu Bar and select Quit Skitch.

5. Activity Monitor

Activity Monitor is a useful tool that allows you to monitor hardware and resource usage on your Mac. Besides, you can easily quit app using Activity Monitor on your Mac.

To use it, launch Activity Monitor on your Mac, double-click the app you want to quit, then you click on the Quit button at the top left of the Activity Monitor window, and you will click the blue Quit button from the prompt.
