Even though iOS 14 has just been released for just a short period of time, it’s now possible to jailbreak the new version of the iPhone’s operating system thanks to CheckRa1n software. So if you are planning to jailbreak your iOS 14 iPhone, here is our guide on how to use CheckRa1n.

How CheckRa1n Work

Checkra1n is a recently released jailbreak tool that helps jailbreak all A7-A11 based iPhone models. This app allows users to jailbreak devices with iOS/iPadOS 12.3 and the support ranges from iOS 12.3 to the latest versions like iOS 14. Specifically, Checkra1n uses a bootrom exploit called checkm8 for jailbreaking iPhone X and older devices. This exploit has been patched on iPhone XR/XS/XS Max, the iPhone 11 line up, and the new iPhone 12 line up. Therefore you won’t be able to use this tool to jailbreaking these models.

Things to Prepare

You will need to prepare something before going through the jailbreaking process:

  • The Checkra1n tool uses a semi-tethered method to jailbreak your device. It means that you have to operate the jailbreaking process via a computer/laptop. Currently, the tool only supports macOS and it hasn’t got an official version for Windows devices yet. Therefore, you will need a Mac for this process.
  • Jailbreaking does not erase your device’s data. However,  it’s highly recommended that you back up your important data into iCloud/iTunes in case anything goes wrong.
  • A lightning/USB-C cable to connect your device with your Mac

Now if you have everything prepared, it’s time for the actual steps

How to Jailbreak iOS 14 using Checkra1n

  • Download Checkra1n software for macOS here and install it by opening the DMG and dragging the app to the Applications folder.
  • Go to the Applications folder. You will see the Checkra1n app here.
  • Right-click on the app and select Open. DO NOT open the app directly by double-clicking on it. Click Open on the pop-up security notification
  • Connect your device to your Mac via a Lightning cable. You might get a prompt on your device to trust the Mac. Tap the Trust button and enter the passcode of your device.
  • The tool will automatically detect your device. If it’s not compatible, a Sorry message will pop up and the Start button will be greyed out. If your device is supported, hit the Start button to continue.
  • On the next screen, you will be asked to put your iOS device in DFU mode. The tool will also guide you through the process.
  • Your iOS device will reboot and enter recovery mode. At this stage, Finder / iTunes will automatically open. Just exit it and access the Checkra1n tool again.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to put the device in DFU mode.
  • Once your iPhone or iPad is detected in DFU mode by the Checkra1n app, it will automatically start the jailbreaking process. After that, you should see the checkra1n loader app on your iPhone/iPad’s home screen.
  • Launch the Checkra1n app on your device. Tap on Cydia to install the package manager. Once installed, you will be done with the jailbreaking process.

Note When Using Checkra1n Tool

Remember that iOS 14 is still new and this is also the first jailbreak for the OS. Therefore, several existing jailbreak tweaks may not be working properly on iOS 14. It means that you may run into many compatibility issues. So, you should consider carefully before proceeding with the jailbreak process.
