Recently, China has successfully launched what’s so- called “The world’s first 6G satellite”, according to its state media. This news comes only a year after Beijing started the development of its next-generation mobile internet connection. Read on to know more about this event and how good the 6G technology is.
Unfortunately, the 6G technology might still be years away from becoming reality. However, Chinese engineers said the satellite will test a new type of communication waves. And, they claim that this wave can boost the current streaming speeds by 100 times.
The World’s First 6G Satellite
The 6G satellite was launched into orbit on Friday, November 6 by a Long March-6 carrier rocket. Besides, the rocket also carried 10 more commercial remote sensing satellites known as NewSat9-18, according to the Chinese state media.
The launch area is in the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre, northern China’s Shanxi Province. Also, it is named after its co-developer, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). And, the satellite itself weighs approximately 70 kg (154 pounds).
The satellite carries multiple experiment devices in order to test the new technology of terahertz waves in space. Terahertz waves, which are high-frequency radiation, allow data to travel at 50 gigabits per second. Plus, the 6G frequency band is set to expand from the millimeter wave spectrum of 5G to the terahertz spectrum. All of that helps provide streaming speeds about 100 times faster than what is possible today. This China satellite launch marks the first time the terahertz communication technology is verified in space.
Besides, 6G research began just a few days after 5G became available in the country. Plus, a few Chinese telecommunication companies have also started their own research on 6G technology recently. These companies include Huawei, Xiaomi, and China Telecom.
What is 6G?
In case you don’t know, 6G is the sixth generation of wireless technology. It’s built on the revamped infrastructure and advanced capacity currently being established on 5G networks. With higher-frequency radio bands, it will give networks much faster speeds with lower latency. This offers 6G the ability to support sophisticated mobile devices and systems like automated cars.
Advantages of 6G over 5G
Scientists expected the new 6G can support data rates of 1 terabyte per second (Tbps). This level of capacity and latency will be unprecedented and extend the performance of 5G apps.
The higher frequencies of 6G offer much faster sampling rates in addition to providing significantly better throughput and data rates. In fact, 6G technology is 100 times faster than 5G. And, it’s up to 1000 times when compared to 4G. What a huge next-gen leap!
In addition, MEC, a point of consideration as an improvement to 5G, will be built into all 6G networks. This will provide many potential advantages, making the use of artificial intelligence (AI) possible in daily life.
