Apple Arcade | Is it Worth it?

Subscribing to Apple Arcade gives you and your family a month long free trial (even across multiple devices). After using Apple Arcade for a month, you’ll be asking yourself “is it worth it?”. Allow us to give you our opinion with some pros and cons to help you decide.

Apple Arcade

The Pros

Family Fun

One of the first things we noticed when we started using Apple Arcade was the vast amount of family friendly games available to you. PAC-MAN Party Royale, Big Time Sports, Fledging Heroes and LEGO Brawls were some of the first games we played and it was loads of fun! It’s great for families as you can provide your kid with plenty of games that are just good clean fun and it won’t cost you anymore than the subscription cost, regardless of how many games you play.

It’s Affordable

The Apple Arcade free trial is obviously such a great deal. It’s only $4.99 per month which means if you’re only going to use it some of the time, it’s still worth the money.

It’s Playable Offline

Have a long flight ahead of you? Why not download a few games to entertain you during your flight. This has to be one of the biggest advantages Apple Arcade has over it’s competitor, Google Stadia. With Google Stadia, you are streaming the games, which means that you have to depend on your internet connection when playing games. As most gamers know, there’s nothing more frustrating than your internet connection affecting your enjoyment of the game you’re playing.

The Cons

It Feels Budget

Sadly, this is the main downside for me. The majority of games I’ve played have been nice, but they feel like there’s something lacking. Where Cards Fall, one of the main games advertised before the release of Apple Arcade, was a good amount of challenging but the “coming of age” storyline felt slow and an annoying divide between the fun parts of the game.

Lifelike: Chapter One seemed visually stunning at the beginning but then also felt quite slow and underwhelming as the game progressed. Perhaps it got more interesting later on but I lost interest before that which speaks volumes to me.

Overland, another game that was highly anticipated. It seemed a bit dull and didn’t grip me. Even. Though it was one of the games that I was most looking forward to playing.

There are some games that I did truly love and some games that are still challenging me today, so it’s not all bad. But it’s hugely disappointing when you download a game that you think is going to entertain you and it does quite the opposite.

Finding New Games is an Effort

When we first got our Apple Arcade subscription, I already had a list of games that I wanted to play and finding them was a challenge in itself! The App Store has a separate section for Apple Arcade games, but sadly no search bar. If you search on the App Store, it will only show you Apps that aren’t in Apple Arcade. To find the games that I wanted to play, I had to click on all games. This didn’t display them in alphabetical order, it was displayed in the order they were released. This is great if you want to play the latest releases. But for me, I had to scroll back to the very bottom to find the games I was interested in!

Is it Worth it?

In general, it’s all good, especially for iPad users. On the first day with my subscription, I felt like I would never pay for this subscription. The games felt low budget but were designed to look nice. But the longer I played, the more I appreciated what I was getting. For me, I play a lot of games anyway and the way I see it, it can only get better. Game developers will see the current market and try to get their game to be better than the others. I predict that a year from now, we’ll be seeing some absolutely stunning games available for Apple Arcade. Just like what Netflix did for movies, Apple Arcade will do for games.
