Since the AirPods Max launch last week, there’s been a lot of debate about Apple’s first over-ear headphones. And, the most discussed one is “Is the AirPods Max really worth $549?”. Well, if you’re thinking about buying new headphones, here are 5 reasons why you might want to consider AirPods Max.
It’s hard to find any wireless headset that matches high-quality wired headphones. However, we are very impressed with the sound quality the AirPods Max can deliver. The AirPods Max’s sound profile is well-balanced and not overly aggressive toward either the highs or lows.
Thanks to the H1 chips in each ear cup, the computational audio can continuously adapt to the headphone fit and movement in real-time. Even though we don’t recommend turning the volume up too high, these headphones sound quality still remains solid even at the highest volume levels (offering a clear and distortionless sound).
Speaking of the H1 chips, they deliver more than just good audio quality. In fact, these chips are the key component that integrates the AirPods Max into the Apple ecosystem.
Just like with AirPods and Beats headphones, the H1 chip supports easy pairing and seamless audio switching among devices linked to your iCloud. Therefore, if you’re listening to music from your iPhone and then change to use an iPad, the AirPods Max will automatically switch over to start playing the audio from your iPad.
Fortunately, this is all customizable. So, you can select which devices can take over as audio sources automatically. Plus, it only takes just a couple of taps to manually switch over.
Build quality is the key factor that defines a good set of headphones. Although this mind depends on each person’s perspective, we think the AirPods Max is very comfortable to wear, even for long listening times.
The mesh ear cups offer a good seal while still allowing for some breathability. This helps reduce sweating issues, which are quite common with other materials like leather. Also, in case the ear cups wear out, the magnetic attachment system of the AirPods Max makes them incredibly easy to swap out.
Besides the amazing aluminum ear cups, AirPods Max is also made with stainless steel telescoping arms. This design gives them a quality feel that is pleasantly cool to the touch. However, that also makes the AirPods Max significantly heavier than many headphones on the market. Luckily, the mesh headband does an excellent job of distributing its weight for maximum comfort.
One of the main reasons people buy over-ear headphones is for active noise cancellation (ANC). And, we’ve found out that the AirPods Max does offer that excellent feature in that regard. Honestly, it’s very difficult to hear any surrounding sound while the ANC is turned on. And, yes, you can still turn off ANC if you want to.
On the other hand, there’s also “Transparency Mode“, which lets outside sound in. Therefore, you can enjoy your music and still know what’s going on around you. After a few tests, we’ve found that this mode lets us hear just enough without being too much of a distraction.
There’s also Spatial Audio, a new feature Apple recently rolled out to AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Basically, Spatial Audio is here to give you an immersive 3D-audio experience without being gimmicky. Well, you need to try this to believe! But, this feature does make it feel like the audio is coming from all around you.
For instance, if you’re watching a show on your iPad, you’ll get a surround sound experience which is very nice on its own. However, when you turn your head or move your iPad, the audio adjusts to match the relative orientation of your head and the iPad. Honestly, this is a remarkably good experience that will make you believe that your iPad is actually blasting audio out of its speakers!
The Bottom Line
After all, the $549 price tag can be a bit hard to swallow. But, if you’re invested in having your own Apple ecosystem, the combination of comfort, build quality, and cool features of these headphones might be enough to change your mind.
